The Bottleneck That Broke the Model 

While importing worked for high-volume club furniture, it hit a ceiling with hospitality clients. Hotels needed quick turnarounds, sample pieces, and customized designs, not something that could wait 12 weeks on a boat. 

“At a trade show, I met specifiers who were excited about working with us, but we couldn’t get them samples fast enough. That was the first time I walked away without writing a single order,” Spivak recalls. 

Turning a Warehouse into a Workshop 

That missed opportunity was the wake-up call. Spivak shifted gears and transformed a New Jersey warehouse into a full-scale production facility. Standard models were suddenly available in dozens of finishes, and the business exploded. 

Custom orders soon followed. Designers needed tailored solutions, and Modern Line met the challenge. From frame construction to compliance with strict U.S. building codes, the company refined every aspect of production.

By 2014, the pivot was complete. Every product was made in-house with U.S.-sourced materials. “We don’t use overseas suppliers anymore. Their quality and consistency just don’t match American standards,” Spivak says. 

When the World Paused, Modern Line Accelerated 

Then came 2020. As the pandemic disrupted global operations, Modern Line had a decision to make: shrink or innovate. Spivak chose innovation. 

The company downsized to a more efficient facility, invested in CNC machines, and streamlined processes. The results spoke for themselves: sales climbed in 2021, and the company now grows by 30-40% annually.
